Your Garage and Spring Cleaning

Your garage and spring cleaning

Did you ever think it would happen? Well, it has. Winter is finally at an end, and all of the cold weather, snow, sleet and freezing rain are giving way to budding flowers, greener trees and warmer temperatures.

While you’re probably eager to get out to enjoy the warmer weather, there’s something that comes first: spring cleaning. As you get ready to give your home the once over, be sure not to neglect your garage. In fact, the garage should probably be the place where you begin your whole spring cleaning ritual. Why? Well, it’s always best to do the difficult chores first, and having a clean garage gives you a place to move things from inside that you need to get out of the way.

Preparing to Clean Your Garage

If you’re going to do a job right, then you’ve got to begin it with the proper tools and supplies. Most likely, you’ll be throwing a lot of things away, so make sure you have some heavy‑duty trash bags, too. Also, you’ll want to make sure you have some containers or boxes, as well as some tape, for packing things away. While you’re at it, you may as well grab a sharpie for marking your packed up boxes.

With everything properly sorted, you may be able to put a garage sale together quite easily. Even if you’re not into the idea of having a garage sale, though, categorizing everything is going to make it much easier to keep your garage clean down the road. Plus, you can always donate things, if you want to.

Label, Label, and Label Some More

You knew we were going to go here, right? Your garage is a mess because nothing’s sorted, and when new things find their way in there, they don’t have a dedicated place to go. As you deal with the items, label and sort them, finding a nice place for them while you do. Then, over the course of the coming year, you’ll always know where something needs to go when you’re storing it in your garage.

Work Your Way Down From the Top

It’s the golden rule of cleaning, but it bears repeating. Always begin with the things that are up high and move your way down. You don’t want to put in all of that work cleaning the floor, only to knock dust, grime and dirt down on it later when you’re cleaning things that are above the floor.

Speaking of dust, dirt and grime, do you have a dust mask? If you don’t, it’s probably a good idea to grab one. Given that most areas in your garage go untouched for months at a time, you’re likely to kick up a fair amount of allergens while you’re out there. A good dust mask should keep you breathing free and easy!

Make Next Spring Much Easier

How good does your garage look after putting in all of that work? Pretty good, we bet! Well, now your goal should be to keep it that way. So, make sure that, throughout the upcoming year, you’re cleaning it every once in a while. It shouldn’t be too difficult, since you’ve already done the hard work of sorting everything. By keeping up with regular cleaning, you’ll likely have very little to do in the way of cleaning your garage when next spring rolls around!
