Shed size and more: Take a look at custom small garage doors for your small garages and sheds

Have you ever seen a garage door on someone’s shed and wondered whether that is an actual installation or if they’ve somehow modified a standard garage door for their needs? Perhaps you’re thinking of building your own shed or upgrading what you have with an overhead garage door like this—but you’re not sure you’ll really find one small enough to fit your needs.

These garage doors are in the Moderno 2 beads design, 6' x 7' and 10' x 8', Black, window layout: Right-side Harmony.

Take a look at our 6’ x 7’ and 10’ x 8’ Moderno 2 beads design, pictured here in black with different finishes and details. It creates an amazing complement to the house, both in color and style. You’ll have the choice of using the same design or creating different doors for your shed and garage, and you won’t be stuck with another boring white garage door!

House Digest has a DIY guide for shed building, which includes 15 tips from writers familiar with gardens and outdoor spaces. After all, every project starts by taking the time to consider all the factors and deciding whether you need to hire a contractor or if you can DIY.

Can I really get an overhead garage door for sheds and small garages? And can they be made in smaller sizes than “standard” doors? You bet!

Most people are familiar with the standard garage door sizes because they are the most popular and most readily available. Many doors come in 6’6” or 7’ heights, but those certainly aren’t the only options.

At Garaga, we custom-build doors to spec, which means we can make doors in just about any width and height desired. Custom sizing also helps save on prep and carpentry costs. Our custom sizing ranges include:

Width: 4 feet to 20 feet wide, sizing to the nearest inch

Height: 6 feet to 12 feet high, sizing in one-inch and three-inch increments

Our small garage doors for sheds and other small spaces come in sizes as small as four feet wide, and it’s not going to cost a dime extra!

Every single garage door at Garaga is custom-made. That means that you can get a 4x4 door that’s custom-designed just as easily as you can get a standard 7x8 door. Need something even more unique like a 6x4 door? We can do it all!

So, yes, you absolutely can install a small garage door the size and design you want on your shed, and enjoy all these impressive perks!

What about an insulated garage door for your small garage or shed? Does that matter?

Whether you choose a door with insulation, as well as the level of insulation you choose, will depend on the intended use of your shed or small garage. If you’re in there every single day working on projects, for example, you’ll want an insulated door to help keep the space temperate.

If, however, you’re just storing items in there and aren’t worried about extreme heat or cold, moisture issues, and so forth, a door without insulation or with simple Styrofoam insulation could be just fine.

Check out 6 tips for preventing humidity problems in your shed from global media leader SFGATE. On this list you’ll find things like:

  • Window fans
  • Vents
  • Dehumidifiers
  • Calcium chloride (moisture absorption) containers
  • Caulk
  • Fresh outside air

To heat or not to heat the shed

If you are heating your shed, that will affect the choice in the R-value of your garage door. R-value measures resistance to temperature fluctuations. Different R values have different thicknesses, and insulation levels vary from one door to the next. The important thing to remember is that a higher R-value means you are getting better insulation.

  • Heated: You’ll have the best comfort with insulation of R-12 or higher.
  • Unheated: Here, an insulated garage door with polystyrene or a non-insulated garage door would work.

Vantage garage doors are more energy-efficient than the previous collection. They all come with polystyrene, which is situated between the two steel walls, offering a three-layer door that protects from the elements. Each door is about two inches thick.

Garage Door Options from Acadia 138

The Acadia 138 garage doors come in R-12 rating with polyurethane insulation, which is injected into the space between the steel panels and adheres to the surface, creating a strong layer of insulation from the elements. It also offers twice as much resistance as Styrofoam insulation, making it a great choice for more severe climates.

This garage door is in the Acadia 138 Classic CC design, 5' x 7', Ice White.

When you’re looking for the ultimate insulation, polyurethane offers a lot of protection so that you can use the shed for a workshop, bedroom, office, or other living areas. Plus, you’ll be able to let in the beautiful outdoor air when it’s nice and close out the weather when it gets unpleasant.

2 big reasons to choose a sectional garage door for your shed

1. More storage space

Most homeowners have a ton of stuff they only use once or twice a year, or even that only comes out seasonally. Beach and pool equipment, outdoor furniture, decorations, lawnmowers, ATVs, and other items… the list is endless.

Think about how much time you spend trying to get everything out or find a way to organize it so that it’s not a mess or a headache every time. Aren’t you tired of the endless shuffling?

When you enhance your shed with a sectional overhead garage door, you’ll be able to keep things organized, access them easily, and ensure that storage is never a nightmare again.

2. Easier access with a wider door

Walk-in doors, also known as man doors, limit the space that you have to move things in and out of the shed. Even wider shed doors may not offer as much clearance as a single garage door.

You’ll never have to worry about whether your stuff will fit into or out of the shed when you have a sectional garage door. You won’t have to worry about finagling things or scratching the walls and door frame, either.

Make it even easier with an electric garage door opener for your new garage door

Considering choosing the best model of garage door opener to add to your shed garage door? Here’s what you need to know.

Browse the different features of this garage door opener model LiftMaster 8355W.

This LiftMaster 8355W garage door opener offers quiet operation and the new myQ technology, providing remote monitoring and operation from any smart device through the app. The trolley-style opener takes control to the next level—how cool is that?

  • An overhead central garage door opener (trolley)

Most people choose the trolley style because it is more common and designed for standard garage doors. These doors also work well in spaces with low-headroom clearance, such as in a smaller shed.

This opener is mounted on the ceiling, in the centre of your garage door, and then it is attached to the garage door and the electricity supply. Then, when the button is pushed, the door is lifted up and down.

  • A wall-mounted garage door opener (jackshaft)

For those with a need for space above the garage door, the jackshaft opener might provide a better solution. It’s installed on the side of the garage door, on either wall and provides easy access. It’s ideal for high-lift garage doors, but can be used with any style.

The size and style of your shed will impact the type of opener system that works best for your needs. The best thing that you can do is to contact a professional to discuss the types of lift and other factors. With so much to choose from, that professional guidance can be immeasurable in helping with your selection.

What about other LiftMaster accessories?

Those going with a manual door can add a pull chain or lift handles for easy opening from both the inside and out.

Want more security? Consider installing inside locks for extra protection.
