Reasons to install a sectional door on a shed, barn or small garage?

If you currently have, or are improving or building a shed, barn or small garage, you have a lot of choices to make. One important choice is whether or not to add a sectional door to the structure. Is it a good idea? Yes, and below are four very good reasons why. Before we look at them, though, let’s first consider a few issues about these structures and their needs.

First steps

If you are going to use a sectional garage door on your shed, barn or garage, you need a minimum size allowance must be available in order to lift the door up beneath the roof. That means the shed must have at least 112 ft2 of floor space, or a size of 8 feet by 14 feet. There also must be adequate headroom above the door, and this is 5 inches (127 mm), plus 2 more inches (51 mm) if you are thinking of using an electric door opener.

Okay, if that is possible, it’s time to look at four good reasons to use such doors:

Four good reasons

  • Typically, you would require two wood or steel doors that opened outward and which were awkwardly sized at around 36" x 78". When you opt to install a sectional garage door, though, you erase this difficult setup and just have the door that slides open easily and in one piece.
  • If your doors opened inward rather than outward, you lose a load of space. With a sectional door, you have a lot of available floor space that can be used for storage, working and more.
  • Opting for standard, manual access doors typically limits you to a working space of 72" or less. If you are eager to store a 3‑wheel motorcycle like a Spyder or a snowmobile, it is difficult to maneuver that in and out of the space. Overhead doors give you a much wider space in which to work.
  • With a sectional door, an electric garage door opener is possible. Making life much easier. You can just ride right up on a bike or sled, stay on it and click the controls to open the doors and head inside. No dismount, shutting off, restarting and more.

Are you ready to begin? The options…

Sizes

The options where size is concerned are almost limitless. The door dimensions, start at a minimum width of 4 feet (1.2 m) but can be as wide as needed, to the nearest inch (25 mm). The most common door heights are between 6′ 6″ and 7′ (1.98 and 2.1 m).

Door designs

Here too, your choice in products can seem almost limitless. You can have standard styles, those that are embossed with rectangle panels, thin lines, flush designs or even those with heavily decorative designs similar to classic carriage doors. Many people actually coordinate shed doors with home garage doors.

Windows

Hadn’t thought about windows in the door? Why not? They give you a lot of light, a touch of style, and can coordinate easier with your home’s design or style.

Decorative hardware

Houses with decorative styles, like carriage house styles and arches may want to also have decorative hardware. This can include hinges and handles in wrought iron, and other refined and appealing elements that never go out of style.
