5 Trouble-Free Ways to Fix Any Garage Door Opener

You’ve got your coffee in hand, and you’re rushing out the door, and all of a sudden you discover that the garage door won’t open. How frustrating is that?

There’s no need to worry, though! That’s because there are 5 easy things you can do to fix your garage door opener.

1. Did the power go out?

In your rush to get out the door, you might not have even noticed! If this is the case, you’ll just have to operate your garage door manually. To do this, just pull down on the red emergency cord.

It’s also possible that your garage door might have a latch on the side. You can use this to secure the garage door after you’re done using it. Just be sure to turn off the power to the door, though. You don’t want anyone trying to open it with the garage door opener once the power comes back on!

In other cases, you may not have to do the above, as your garage door opener could be equipped with a backup battery.

2. The door won’t close! What now?

This is probably caused by the photoelectric sensors being misaligned – the ones that keep the door from closing on things. Go check them out and put them back into their proper spots. You’ll know you’ve been successful if the blinking lights on the wall panel stop blinking.

3. The remote won’t work no matter how many times I click the button!

Three things could possibly be at play here:

  • The remote’s battery has run out of juice. Simply replace the battery and see if it works then.
  • Maybe you’re not holding the button down for a long enough period of time. Be sure to give it two seconds for the remote and the receiver to communicate with one another.
  • It could be that there’s something interfering with the signal. In this case, make sure that the antenna for the garage door opener has enough clearance.

If none of the above steps work, then it’s time to give a garage door repair specialist a call.

4. The garage door only partially opens or closes.

Head to your toolbox and grab a screwdriver. You’re going to need to adjust the ascent and descent limits manually. Typically, you’ll find the buttons for these located near the motor. However, it can vary from opener to opener, so be sure to consult the instructions for your particular garage door opener model. If you don’t have the instructions handy, you can probably find them online.

5. The garage door opener is making quite a racket!

While it could be the garage door opener that’s making all that noise, it’s probably something else. Inspect the different things that make up your whole garage door apparatus:

  • Did a spring break somewhere?
  • Did the garage door tracks become bent?
  • Is there a loose chain or belt?
